Justin Oei is an organist, conductor, and singer currently based in Syracuse, New York and serving as the Organist-Choir Director at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Skaneateles, New York. A native of New Jersey, he received a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude and departmental high honors in Music (with a double-major in Government) from the College of William & Mary. Currently, he is a first-year Master of Music student in Organ Performance at the Setnor School of Music, Syracuse University, as a student of Dr. Anne K. Laver.
As a church musician, Justin has served in Lutheran, Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, and United Methodist contexts. While at William & Mary, Justin served as the Organist and Choir Director for the Episcopal Church at William & Mary, leading two weekly services (Tuesdays on the 1740s Wren Chapel Organ and Sundays at Bruton Parish Church) as well as the Organist for Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Norge, Virginia. Additional experience includes service as collaborative pianist for the W&M Theatre, Speech, and Dance department’s introductory Musical Theatre course and as the rehearsal pianist (and occasionally assistant conductor/section leader) for the William & Mary Choir.
Justin is equally at home as a researcher, having received high honors for his W&M senior thesis “Grant Us Wisdom, Grant Us Courage”: Theology in the Organ Music of Paul Manz, advised by Dr. Tom Payne. His research interests span both musicology and liturgical studies, particularly surrounding music of the Anglican choral tradition.
